10,000 effective instructors must report for JSS duty by today.
The deadline for more than 10,000 newly promoted teachers to report to their workstations is today.
The chief executive of the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), Nancy Macharia, said lawmakers last week that the commission was mapping out the aforementioned teachers after they submitted online applications for advancement.
When the 10,833 teachers have attained the necessary requirements for deployment, they will start teaching in Junior Secondary Schools (JSS). “The committee thoroughly examined individual files and determined that 10,833 primary school teachers who met the necessary requirements were qualified for transfer to junior secondary schools. By Monday, February 20, they are expected to report, said Macharia.
ongoing procedure
“The mapping of primary school instructors eligible to teach in JSS is a continuous procedure, and verification of the mapped files is still happening to identify more suitable teachers,” the speaker continued.
The Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) or its equivalent, a Diploma in Education, a Bachelor’s Degree in Education, a minimum C+ (plus) mean grade in the KCSE or its equivalent, a minimum C+ (plus) in each of the two teaching subjects at the KCSE or its equivalent, and eight units in each of the two teaching subjects are all requirements, according to TSC, for deployment to JSS.
The deployment will increase the 30,550 primary educators who were sent to JSS for Grade Seven and from whom the commission allotted one educator per class for each Grade Seven class.
According to Macharia, the commission had hired 30,550 teachers (one teacher per class), bringing the teacher shortage at Grade Seven to 30,550. The teacher establishment for Grade Seven level is 61,000 (at least two instructors per class).
The transfer takes place at a time when JSS is congested as a result of a large student body, strained infrastructure, and expensive tuition charges from private colleges.
450 instructors are anticipated to be hired by the TSC for secondary schools starting today, when the current round of hiring has concluded.
both long-term and pensionable
The openings resulted from TSC hiring 35,550 teachers out of the 36,000 slots allotted to them, of which 9,000 posts were for JSS teachers on permanent and pensionable terms of service, 1,000 posts were for primary school teachers on permanent and pensionable terms, 21,550 posts were for JSS teacher interns, and 4,000 posts were for primary school teacher interns.
According to Ms. Macharia, the TSC faced a deficit of 116,000 teachers as of June 2022 (48,327 at the primary level and 67,673 at post-primary institutions nationwide).
Nevertheless, depending to budgetary allocation, TSC intends to promote approximately 25,996 instructors during the fiscal year 2022–2023. 11,258 of these teachers—those in Job Groups J (C1), K (C2), and L—will receive promotions to the Common Cadre (C3).
After three years of satisfactory performance, employees are promoted from Job Group J to K and K to L.
promotional competition
A total of 13,717 teachers will be promoted via competitive promotion, which involves submitting an online application, finishing the Teacher Proficiency Course, and going through a promotional interview conducted by the commission.
In arid and semi-arid territories (Asals) and hard-to-staff locations, where the commission assigns an additional 5% of teaching seats, about 1,021 instructors will be promoted through affirmative action.
To ensure ideal staffing and stability, local instructors are hired and kept in these locations.
