Reasons Headteachers Avoid Applying for TSC CSO Positions
Primary school principals are hesitant to apply for the positions for Curriculum Support Officers (CSOs) that the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has offered.
In the preceding month, TSC published job postings for CSO I (84 posts), CSO II (regular) (286 positions), and CSO II (CSO SNE) (295 positions). There were also 95 openings for Principal Teacher Management Officers (PTMO).
On Tuesday, July 18, 2023, the commission re-advertised the aforementioned posts due to a lack of interest from several elementary school principals.
The fact that primary school teachers are consciously choosing not to apply for CSO positions reflects their perception that the role does not offer substantial financial incentives. Since the CSO position doesn’t come with significant pay, many headteachers in job group C5 believe it to be unattractive.
Because they are currently in charge of budgets that include sizeable allocations like the Free Primary Education (FPE) program, the Junior Secondary School (JSS) money, and the Free Day Secondary Education (FDSE) funding, P1 headteachers express their concerns.
The CSO frequently visits schools in search of advice from the headteachers despite not having enough funding, according to an unnamed headteacher. I am unable to quit my reliable work in favor of one that would require me to rely on outside help.
