Prior to the August pay increase, TSC Invites KNUT,KUPPET For CBA Talks
Teachers unions have been invited by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to a conference next week where the 2021–2025 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) will be reviewed.
The Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) and Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (Kuppet) secretary generals were each sent a letter in which TSC set the deadline for the negotiations as August 22, 2023.
“The goal of this letter is to extend an invitation to you to attend a meeting with the Teachers Service Commission on Tuesday, August 22, 2023, beginning at 9:00 am. A letter issued to Mr. Akello Misori, secretary general of Kuppet, states that the meeting will be held at the Kenya School of Government (KSG), Lower Kabete, Nairobi.
The non-monetary CBA that the two unions signed in 2021 has been under review, as demanded by the two unions.
They urge the commission to evaluate the non-monetary CBA in order to account for the fact that their salaries have been reduced due to the rise in statutory deductions and the implementation of new levy types, such as the affordable housing tax, as well as their eroding earnings.
The National Treasury cut the TSC’s initial demand for teachers’ allowances from Sh2 billion to Sh1 billion, which is regrettable. During the unveiling of the 2023–2027 TSC strategic plan, Knut secretary general Collins Oyuu stated, “We still want our TSC to sit with us and reopen the way for dialogue.
“A teacher who is underpaid cannot deliver. We will restart the salary component of the negotiations that we skipped in 2021 if the government demands performance, he continued.
While Kuppet wants a 42% compensation increase for teachers beginning on July 1st, Knut has been pressing for a 60% salary increase.

Before the August wage raise, TSC invites Knut and Kuppet for CBA discussions.
The Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) recently announced a salary increase of 7% to 10% retroactive to July 1 and payable in two installments, which coincides with the resumption of the CBA negotiations.
The new salary structure that will take into account the adjustments made by SRC chairperson Lyn Mengich on Wednesday, August 9, 2023 has not yet been made public by TSC.
Teachers and government employees will receive a 5% salary increase in their August paychecks, retroactive to July 1. Also changing is the house allowance.
The SRC-announced raise has been derided by Knut, who claims it is an example of the government using one hand to give and the other to take.
Teachers will benefit most from a new bonus if the CBA negotiations are successful and an agreement is achieved.
This is so that the CBA negotiations can assess the teachers’ pay and benefits retroactive to July 1, 2021.
