Excellent News for TSC Teachers Who Are Currently Working as Interns as KUPPET Demand This From TSC
Today, August 28th, is the first day of the third term of the 2023 academic year at the schools. This start of classes coincides with a protracted dispute over teacher pay increases between the teachers’ union and the Teachers Service Commission.
In this backdrop, recent initiatives by the Kenya Union of Post Primary School Teachers (KUPPET) provide some good news for teachers taking part in the Teachers Service Commission internship program. This union, which is mostly made up of educators working in post-primary institutions, is pushing for an increase in the compensation offered to interns. They contend that the existing offering of 20,000 shillings is not enough.
Additionally, KUPPET is advocating for the Teachers Service Commission to automatically hire interns into permanent posts with pension benefits after one year of service, without requiring an interview.
The focus of these debates is Dr. Nancy Njeri Macharia, the Teachers Service Commission’s chief executive officer.

The main demand of KUPPET is that the Teachers Service Commission increase teacher wages by a significant amount, namely between 30 and 70%. The Salaries and Remuneration Commission’s recommended 7 and 10 percent raises have been denied.
On a different front, the Teachers Service Commission is subject to the following demands from the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT):
- KNUT requests that the commission put a stop to the implementation of the recommendations made in the presidential taskforce report on education, which called for demotions of head teachers who lack degree degrees.
- Considering that the majority of head teachers are now enrolled in bachelor’s degree programs, KNUT is instead urging the Teachers Service Commission to give them enough time to finish their degree programs.
- In addition, KNUT is advocating for an increase in the pay for teachers working in the lowest grade, B5, at the moment.
As the new academic year gets underway, these are the main developments in the ongoing discussions between the teachers’ unions and the Teachers Service Commission.
