KNEC Provides Additional Exams for Sick Students
There could be big changes in how students, particularly those with health issues, handle their exams in Kenya if the plan put out by Members of Parliament (MPs) is implemented.
The Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) should consider excluding students who are hospitalized or experiencing health concerns from sitting tests until they have fully recovered, according to a recommendation made by the National Assembly’s Education Committee.\
If this recommendation becomes law, elementary and secondary school students will be able to postpone tests because of illness, just like college students now can.
Julius Melly, the committee’s chairman, emphasized that it is not practicable to provide regular assessments to students who are ill or have just given birth.
In response, the committee looked at potential remedies, such as the notion of holding additional exams in the future. Melly underlined that maintaining fairness and a level playing field for all students would be possible by ensuring similar alternative assessments.

While this is a change in policy, Melly also pointed out that it is doable, as was discussed in a meeting with Council chief executive Dr. David Njengere.
Parliamentarians have expressed concerns about the fairness and viability of asking a student to take an exam at 8 a.m. after giving birth, for instance, at 6 a.m.
With so little time for physical and mental preparation, they contend that such demands are inappropriate and have been called “incorrect, highly unfair, unkind, and inhumane.”
