Application for Maternity Leave: A Step-by-Step Guide
Teachers in Kenya are entitled to maternity leave, which is essential for the health of both the mother and the unborn child.
The TSC Maternity Leave Application can be completed and submitted in the following steps:
- Eligibility and Length: Separate from yearly leave, female teachers are eligible to 90 calendar days of maternity leave starting on the date of delivery. During their spouse’s maternity leave, male instructors can apply for up to 10 days of paternity leave.
- Application Submission: Submit your request for maternity leave at least one month before it is necessary. Send it to the District Education Officer (DEO), Ministry of Education Officer (MEO), or County Education Officer (DCE) via your institution’s head of faculty. Include all necessary medical documentation.
- Paternity Leave: Male educators are eligible to apply for paternity leave while their spouse is on maternity leave. If a teacher has more than one wife, the spouse identified on the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) Card will determine which leave is provided.

- Obtain the Application Form: Access the Maternity Leave Application Form via various channels via the TSC website. Three copies of this form must be completed.
- Finish Part I: Include your full name (Mrs. or Miss), TSC number, spouse’s name, expected start date of maternity leave, and sign and date the application in Part I.
- Medical Exam: Make an appointment for a medical checkup with a licensed doctor who will complete Part II of the form. A document confirming your pregnancy and the anticipated due date will be provided by the medical official. Be sure to date, sign, and stamp the certificate.
- Submit the Application: Hand deliver the completed application to the principal or headteacher of your school in three copies. Make sure to finish it at least a month before your anticipated maternity leave.
- Await Approval: After reviewing your application, the principal or headteacher of your school will submit it for review and approval to the TSC County Director. Apply much in advance because it could take some time for approval.
- Maternity Leave: If your application is accepted, you will have a three-month leave of absence that will begin on the date listed in your application and medical certificate.
Important Remarks
- Maternity leave applicants by teachers are not permitted to take annual leave within the same year.
- Before returning to work following your maternity leave, make sure you send in a birth notification.
This procedure makes sure that pregnant teachers get the help they need and that their leave is handled properly.
