Ministry of Education Dismisses Raising University Entry Grade to B-.
The Ministry of Education has denied claims that it was planning to alter the prerequisites for admission to universities for Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) applicants in 2024.
In a succinct statement on Monday, Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba denied rumors that the government intended to improve the university entrance grade from the customary C+ to B-.
Ogamba called the claims untrue and deceptive, and he advised Kenyans, especially parents and students, to avoid believing them.
After a contentious report suggested that the ministry was intending to raise the admission grades prior to the release of the KCSE tests, Kenyans voiced their worries, forcing the CS to provide clarification.
The flagged article claims that the CS made the announcement during a press briefing, stressing the significance of preserving graduate quality in a highly competitive labor market.
A portion of the flagged article stated, “This announcement marks a departure from the traditional university entry grade of C+, which has been the standard for years.”
The most recent explanation comes as the KCSE exam marking process draws to a close, with examiners anticipated to complete the procedure prior to the 2025 academic year.
After three weeks of exams, the KCSE was completed on November 22. Four weeks ago, on November 27, marking started.
Additionally, this comes a week after Education CS declared that, due to a number of delays, the exam results would now be released in January 2025 rather than December of this year.
According to Ogamba, the large number of applicants who took the test and the intense scrutiny being used to prevent cheating were the main causes of the delays.
965,501 individuals enrolled for the 2024 KCSE exams, the most in the history of the national tests, according to the education CS.
“The high volume of applicants makes this year’s exam special. A KNEC official informed the media, “We are taking more time to make sure there are no inconsistencies or cases of malpractice in the results.”
