According to cluster points, Kuccps compiles a list of the most popular university courses.
A number of undergraduate programmes offered by Kenyan universities will be open to students who passed the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Examination (KCSE) in 2022.
Students with a C+ or higher should select their courses using cluster points, according to the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS).
Cluster points are determined by comparing a student’s performance on the KCSE examination in the four subjects necessary for admission to a specific degree program to that of the top candidates in that KCSE exam year.
560 undergraduate degree programs in all, organized into 20 clusters, are listed by KUCCPS.
On the listing of clusters, one of the media sites spoke with Apollo Osango, an examiner for the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC).
According to him, cluster groups are now decided based on the number of slots that are available in institutions in relation to the number of applicants rather than the job opportunities that are already available.
The most applicable course in Cluster 1 is the Bachelor of Laws (LL.B. ), according to the KUCCPS webpage.
“Law is the most desired course in Kenya, and since most universities that provide it can accommodate a big number of students, it becomes the most applied course,” Osango continued.
KUCCPS lists geosciences and related courses in Cluster 4, which includes sixteen undergraduate programs.
The fact that there are currently 64 different undergraduate programs in the category shows why it is well-liked by students.
Social sciences, media studies, fine arts, film, animation, graphics, and courses linked to these fields are listed under Cluster 3 in KUCCPS.
According to Osango, the category is well-liked for two reasons: first, since the prerequisite cluster points are typically low, which encourages a lot of applicants; and second, because openings are frequently available in the institutions that provide those courses, just like in the field of law.
Cluster 4, which encompasses sixteen undergraduate programs, is where geosciences and related courses are included according to KUCCPS.
Engineering, engineering technology, and related courses are included in Cluster 5.
“Ideally, more students should apply to engineering programs than to geosciences programs, but that is not the case.
Because the course requires more in the way of infrastructure, Osango explains that fewer universities now offer it and that there are also fewer spots available per semester.
Building construction, architecture, and associated courses are included under Cluster 6 in KUCCPS.
Yet, on the website, it is included under Cluster 13, contrary to what KUCCPS stated in an earlier statement on the demand for medical and health-related courses.
“When it comes to demand, what KUCCPS meant to say is that there aren’t many openings for students to apply for.
“For instance, a university may accommodate over 300 students pursuing an LL.B. because all that is required are room and instructors, but for medical, you need science labs, which are more expensive and result in smaller class sizes,” he argues.
He explains that if you don’t have the necessary points, KUCCPS will automatically prevent you from selecting a given route, forcing you to choose a different option.
He continues, “If a student wants to apply to Medicine but is denied due to cluster points, odds are he will go for Law, propelling it upward on the popularity meter.
Agribusiness, Actuarial Science, Accounting, Mathematics, Economics, and Statistics, Interior and Fashion Design, Sports Science, History and Archaeology, Agriculture, Geography, French and German, Music, Education, and Religious Studies round out the list of other popular clusters.
