Bad News For Parents And Students Regarding Triple Varsity Fees
Parents and students have good right to be worried given the growing support for the proposal to quadruple the current university tuition.
In an effort to stabilise the finances of the institutions that are struggling to deliver services, the government and vice chancellors of public universities are reportedly discussing boosting tuition by at least three times what it is currently.
If the government and VCs’ plans come to fruition, the current fee for university students, which is currently Sh16 000 each semester, will rise to Sh48 000 by the middle of this year.
The notion to triple the charge gained traction during a conference that was held in Jogoo House on January 16th with senior management from all public universities and top Ministry of Education officials.
VCs argued that the current university fee was drafted many years ago amid a different economic context, as opposed to the current economy and the value of the shilling.

“Students should make fair tuition payments. In light of this, consider the Sh16,000 in tuition that has been outstanding since 1992, according to the vice-chancellors’ resolution.
If the cost is increased, it is more likely that the majority of university students will stop attending because some are already having trouble paying the existing price. Most students rely on HELB loans, which are not enough to pay for their costs.
