COTU to Hold National Protests Against Fuel Price Increase

COTU to Hold National Protests Against Fuel Price Increase

The government has been under harsh fire from the Central Organization of Trade Unions (COTU) for recent tax increases that will negatively impact Kenyan workers. This non-governmental organization urged the government to examine and lower some of the recently enacted taxes on workers during a press conference that was conducted on Saturday.

Benson Okwaro, the COTU’s deputy secretary general, led the union’s accusations that the government had increased taxes on workers and raised fuel prices at the expense of Kenyan citizens. Okwaro underlined that while wages have not increased for Kenyan employees, the government has continued to impose taxes, raising the cost of living.

In order to better prepare its members for the current economic climate, COTU is requesting a 50% salary rise for all employees throughout the nation. Okwaro demanded a general pay raise and lashed out at the administration for failing to solve this problem.

Okwaro emphasized in an interview with our media team that the goal of their request is to shield Kenyan workers from the government’s exorbitant taxation. He cautioned that because Kenyan workers are struggling with the high cost of living, they may turn to industrial action if the government does not take action to support them.

This situation has developed as a result of a sharp increase in fuel prices, which has caused a great deal of unhappiness among many stakeholders and politicians.

Furthermore, COTU made it clear that their demonstrations are not meant to incite enmity toward the government and refuted any claims that they were planning to sue it. They merely demand that Kenyan workers pay less in taxes.

In the end, COTU is pleading with the government to act quickly to stop the nation from devolving into an economic crisis.
