DPTE, DECTE Reporting Date, and Fee For TTC Intake 2023

DPTE, DECTE Reporting Date, and Fee For TTC Intake 2023

According to the Kenya Universities and Coleges Central Placement Services (KUCCPS), there were 11,359 openings for Diploma Primary Teacher Education (DPTE) and 2,081 for Diploma Early Childhood Teacher Education (DECTE) in training colleges (TTCs) as of July 2023.

Applicants are looking forward to their reporting date in September so they may start their teacher training programs.

Thanks to a website created by KUCCPS, candidates who took the KCSE exams between 2020 and 2022 may now apply online.

The TTC admission grade for DPTE and DECTE courses was changed. A mean grade of C (plain) and Ksh 1,500, which should be paid to KUCCPS via Mpesa, were the only requirements for applying.

The application deadline had been set for July 28, 2023 on the KUCCPS webpage. The present fee structure for public colleges is from 72,000 to 76,000 sh annually.

In three years, the teaching program will be finished. Additionally, a practicum that lasts the entire academic term is a part of it.

Previously, in order to be eligible for teacher preparation, a student had to get a C overall, a C in each of the cluster subjects of math, English, and kiswahili, as well as a C in a science or humanities course.

A student must meet the new requirements by earning a C (plain) average overall and without having any clusters in math, English, or Kiswahili. To train as a secondary school teacher, a student must have a C plain and a C plus in two courses.

This is the situation, in accordance with the suggestions made by the PWPER (Presidential Working Party on Education Reforms).

The Kenya Teachers Colleges Principals’ Association (KTCPA) urged that the Ministry of Education send circulars to TTCs permitting them to accept the modified entry standards.

Since a teacher must be knowledgeable in the subject matter of their area of specialization, which requires a higher grade in that topic, the upgraded admission criteria are vital for the country. The subject grade was initially remained a C plus. However, the standard has fallen from a C plus to a C plain, according to KTCPA Chairman Paul Barasa.

All TTCs have accepted the competency-based teacher education strategy, according to Mr. Barasa.

We provide the Diploma in Primary Teacher Education, Diploma in Early Childhood Teacher Education, and Diploma in Secondary Teacher Education in the primary teacher training colleges. I can vouch for the fact that all TTCs, whether public and private, have launched these programs and they are currently in operation,” he added.

ECDE, a diploma in primary and secondary teacher education, and other programs are provided by Kenya’s 35 public and 28 private TTCs.

Education advocates asserted that the increased entrance requirements will help TTCs that are experiencing problems enrolling pre-service teachers in their programs. Some TTCs have enrollments of fewer than 20 students.

The cabinet secretary for education, Ezekiel Machogu, mentioned poor enrollment, late tuition payments from parents, and insufficient fiscal support as problems TTCs encounter.

The CS expressed confidence that the new TTC entrance requirements will lead to an increase in the number of pre-service teachers.

“However, upholding the bar for learning will provide new challenges. The CS stated that his ministry has already started preparing implementation plans for the PWPER task group’s recommendations. The task force proposed that the ministry set guidelines for a one-year retooling and upgrading program for teachers who graduated before 2023.

Speaking at the annual gathering of principals of public and private teacher training institutes at the Voyager Hotel in Mombasa, the CS urged teacher educators to produce qualified teachers who can successfully implement the competency-based curriculum in classrooms.
