Eregi Girls’ Mysterious Disease Fails Five Tests
Nearly 100 pupils at Eregi Girls High School became ill on Monday, but official efforts to determine the cause of the illness have so far produced no definitive answers. Members of the National Assembly Public Investment Committee on Education and Governance were advised by Health Cabinet Secretary Susan Nakhumicha that five tests on the samples they had gathered had turned up no microorganisms that were the cause of the disease. To ascertain the illness’s exact nature, additional testing are nevertheless planned.
The Director of Public Health had been contacted, according to Ms. Nakhumicha, and as of Tuesday, 95 girls were being treated in hospitals. She said that extra samples had been sent to Nairobi’s Kenya Medical Research Institute for more thorough examination.
The kids concerned in this incident had previously complained about having bad knees that made it difficult for them to stand or move. The situation remained unclear as several parents continued to pick up their daughters from school, despite Ezekiel Machogu, the education cabinet secretary, saying that the pupils who were sent home would return to class on Monday. Officials from the Ministry of Education maintained that learning should continue and set up a counter to keep track of parents who took their kids home.

Jared Obiero, the director of education for the western region, asked parents to keep their kids in school so that health inspectors can keep a careful eye on them, especially Form Four pupils getting ready for their Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exams. However, several parents raised worries about their kids’ welfare and made the decision to bring them home for comfort and therapy.
Considering the unidentified nature of the illness and the probable risk of transmitting it to families, Dr. Steven Wandei, the head of Medical Services in Kakamega County, advised against sending the students back home. Some parents decided to bring their daughters home despite these cautions because they were worried about their emotional health.
In conclusion, despite worries about the potential spread of the illness, some parents have decided to send their children home because the government’s efforts to identify the ailment affecting pupils at Eregi Girls High School have not yet produced definitive results. There are plans for additional tests and surveillance as the situation is still unsettled.
