Government announces date of school closure

Prior to the 2023 National Examinations, the Ministry of Education released the third trimester school calendar. Basic Education Principal Secretary Dr. Bellio Kipsang said that schools will start classes on October 30 in a statement issued on September 15th. In order to make sure that the students’ exam time went smoothly, he recommended parents to make the necessary preparations and work closely with teachers.

“On August 28, 2023, all schools started the third term of the 2023 academic year. This term is expected to last until October 27, 2023, in order to accommodate the national test season. To allow for proper preparations before the National Examinations begin on October 30th, 2023, school activities involving parents and other stakeholders are prohibited during this period, the statement added.

Kipsang also emphasized the steps the government has taken to guarantee uninterrupted education during the third term. Additionally, the government is prepared to provide schools with the necessary capitation payments to enable the efficient operation of the academic calendar.

As part of this allocation, Junior Secondary Schools would get Ksh1.75 billion, Free Primary Education Ksh1.56 billion, and Free Day Secondary Education Ksh12.9 billion.

By September 20th, 2023, the monies would be transferred to the appropriate school accounts, according to the statement, supporting the efficient performance of specific instructional activities. According to government laws, detailed summaries of the money and instructions for their appropriate use have been delivered to the schools.

The Ministry of Education distributed Ksh89.4 billion in total as capitation for primary, junior, and secondary school education for the 2022–2023 fiscal year.
