Government Teams Up With the World Bank to Strengthen TTCs

In order to better prepare prospective primary school teachers, the government and the World Bank intend to improve the 35 Public Primary Teacher Training Colleges’ (PTTCs’) capacity to do so.

The Kenya Primary Education Equity in Learning Program (KPEELP), a capacity-building initiative, aims to reduce gaps in learning outcomes within schools.

The KPEELP’s national coordinator, Martha Ekirapa, stressed the program’s potential influence on institutions of basic education. She emphasized the value of pre-service teacher graduates receiving training in skills and competency, emphasizing their crucial role in the educational system, particularly in the implementation of the competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).

When the Kenya KPEELP technical mission team visited Thogoto Teachers Training College in Kiambu County to assess program readiness, Ekirapa offered these comments. She emphasized that the major objective of KPEELP is to eliminate disparities in educational achievements and participation by ensuring equitable access to opportunities.

By improving learning outcomes in particular counties, keeping girls in upper primary school, and building the capacity of educational institutions to execute reforms, the government, in collaboration with the World Bank, seeks to close these gaps.

As part of this project, teacher educators will be retooled, ICT-enabled resource centers will be established, necessary reference materials will be made available, and significant connections will be made between PTTCs and neighboring schools for the sake of practical training. Additionally, it emphasizes PTTC accountability system improvement.

Additionally, the project aims to improve the governance of 542 primary schools spread throughout ten counties. Because of the low levels of reading and numeracy in these schools, intervention is essential. The reading and numeracy abilities necessary for high-quality education are anticipated to increase with strengthened school governance and accountability systems.

The Elimu Yetu Coalition’s national coordinator, Joseph Wasikhongo, highlighted that the mission’s goal was to determine whether schools were ready to execute the suggested reform proposals. He pointed out that the mission had offered insightful viewpoints and information on education that were essential to the accomplishment of these reforms.

Ruth Charo, a Senior Education Specialist with the World Bank’s Education Global Practice, and representatives from the Global Partnership for Education (GPE) were notable attendees at the event.
