Government to Hire Pastors in All Schools Nationwide
In order to strengthen Value-based Education (VbE) in schools, the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) will employ pastors and imams if the recommendations of the Presidential Working Party on Education Reforms are implemented.
According to the report President William Ruto received on Tuesday, August 1, stakeholders in the education sector stressed the importance of increasing public knowledge of VbE.
All members of the school community should be included in order to achieve this goal, values should be interwoven into all subject areas, and formal chaplaincy programs should be designed and implemented in schools, according to the taskforce’s recommendations.
If the recommendation is accepted, the Ministry of Education (MoE) will be responsible with developing established rules and programs for chaplaincy (religious and moral) and counseling.
The Ministry of Education, organizations that provide legal professionals with professional counseling, and faith-based organizations will collaborate to create curricula.
“TSC shall employ and deploy teachers as chaplains/imams in schools, and the chaplains/imams can be shared between schools,” said PWP.

The task force avoided getting into specifics of the training needed for pastors and imams who will collaborate with TSC. Furthermore, the religious leaders who would hold the offices were not mentioned.
TSC will also be responsible for ensuring that schools uphold each student’s constitutional right to freedom of religion.
A statement in the paper states that “the Basic Education Act should include a provision on facilitation of religious rights of learners in schools, including the sponsored schools.”
The suggestion suggested assigning the duty of hosting consultation sessions with all national religious groups to the Education Cabinet Secretary.
According to the newspaper, the idea aims to establish rules that will make it easier for all pupils to practice their right to freedom of religion in institutions of basic education.
