HELB Launches New Student One-Week Application Phase

For new students, HELB has opened a one-week application phase. The Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) notified on Sunday, July 23, that applicants for financial aid who plan to enroll in schools in September 2023 have one week to do so.

This option was only open to students whose applications had previously been submitted but had been rejected by the board on Thursday, July 6, according to a HELB representative who talked with media agencies.

Therefore, during the academic year 2023–2024, students who had not previously submitted an application would not be qualified for financial aid from the government.

First-time applicants opted for the following option because, in accordance with HELB, “since we had already verified their details, once we get funding, they do not have to go through the whole process.”

Since their information had already been verified, it was decided to employ this option for first-time applicants to spare them from having to go through the entire application process again.

The application portal is scheduled to close on Monday, July 31. University-placed students were encouraged to submit their applications as soon as they could by the representative.

HELB had initially cancelled the first-year student allocation due to financial restrictions. While this was going on, continuing students were given money and told to wait until it was disbursed.

President William Ruto said on Saturday, July 22, that the government will fully subsidize low-income students starting college in September.

According to Ruto, students from wealthy households would be qualified for a scholarship that would pay between 20 and 30 percent of their tuition.
