How the new KCSE grading system will lead to more students joining varsity

A new grading system that emphasizes student strengths and reduces required subjects will help students sitting the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exams. Higher overall scores and expanded eligibility for post-secondary education are anticipated outcomes of this reform. The benefits of these improvements may start to show themselves this year.

Students’ achievement in mathematics, English or Kiswahili, and five other top-performing disciplines will be taken into account when evaluating them under the new system. The way pupils are currently graded in seven subjects—including English, Kiswahili, math, and two sciences—is in opposition to this.

The modification is one of the suggestions made by the PWPER, the Presidential Working Party on Education Reforms. This change is being made in order to address the bias in the present system against students whose best topics do not fall into one particular cluster.

A year has been allocated to the Ministry of Education to create the rules for adopting the new KCSE grading system. The PWPER report underlines that while math and science evaluate numerical skills, English and Kiswahili assess literacy levels.

A reduction in the proportion of applicants receiving distinction (a mean grade of A or A-) over time has sparked worries about inefficiency. According to the Kenya National Examinations Council (Knec), before the 8-4-4 educational system was implemented, a higher percentage of applicants received distinctions.

It is thought that the rigidity of the current marking structure contributes to the stress related to KCSE exams and even exam cheating. As a result, the PWPER’s suggestion to reevaluate the grading system is being looked into.

This change to the grading system may increase the proportion of applicants who receive higher grades, increasing their likelihood of being admitted to a university or institution. Additionally, it might revive the Module II programs created to help students who are unable to receive government funding and placement.

To ensure accurate assessments of students’ abilities, education stakeholders are highlighting the significance of honesty in the administration and grading of exams. 19.62% of students passed the KCSE examinations in 2022, a lower percentage than in neighboring nations.

If effectively adopted, this new grading strategy could improve students’ educational trajectories and produce a more equitable system that takes into account their talents and shortcomings.
