Intern teachers are in pain following the house levy deduction.

Intern teachers are in pain following the house levy deduction.

TSC intern instructors struggle with deductions from their pay, which puts them in a stressful situation. The interns’ employer, TSC, decided to lower their compensation by deducting housing fund contributions and past-due arrears through KRA.

Because these intern instructors have previously faced comparable deductions without accompanying pay increases, the issue is all too familiar.

A 360 sh. deduction was made for NSSF in the month of July. By August, 1.5% of their stipends were going toward the housing fund, continuing the pattern.

For primary and junior secondary responsibilities, respectively, salaries of sh. 15,000 and sh. 20,000 were guaranteed; however, after all deductions, the take-home pay is only about sh. 14,000 and sh. 18,000, respectively.

With primary intern teachers receiving only Sh. 12,570 and their junior secondary colleagues receiving Sh. 17,570, this month has delivered an even greater blow. These sums are a great cry from the regular income to which they have become used.

The ongoing reductions run the risk of deflating the excitement of prospective interns, who might be discouraged by the thought of receiving pay that is insufficient and does not keep up with the rising cost of living.

Many teachers have been discouraged from even contemplating internships due to the issue of poor pay, which has led them to look for better-paying positions within the Board of Management (BOM).

It’s interesting to note that while compensation for permanent teachers have increased, no such changes have been made for intern teachers’ pay.

TSC has started the process of assigning 20,000 newly hired teacher interns to various schools as part of its plans. Of those, 18,000 will be sent to junior secondary schools, and the final 2,000 will be assigned to elementary schools. These tasks are intended to aid in the adoption of the new curricula.

Teacher unions like Knut, Kuppet, and Kusnet have failed to protect the interns from these deductions or push for stipend changes in the face of this circumstance.

While the negotiations were going on, Kuppet made a weak attempt to get the intern instructors a higher monthly salary, but their efforts were unsuccessful.
