Kenya will introduce its RPL policy as its first class of graduates

Kenya is about to implement its Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) policy as the first class of program graduates. During the graduation ceremony scheduled for October 6, 2023, the RPL policy, which aims to reform the education system by recognizing talents earned through experience, will be formally introduced.

The importance of the RPL policy and guidelines was emphasized by Dr. Esther Muoria, the Principal Secretary for Technical and Vocational Education and Training. They will create criteria for recognizing people’s talents, knowledge, and abilities, regardless of when, where, or how they were gained.

RPL is a tool for lifelong learning that makes it easier to transfer credits, get into better schools, and access higher education. Former president Uhuru Kenyatta launched this project, which is anticipated to improve learners’ skills and expand their employment and advanced learning possibilities.

The declaration was made after a technical committee chaired by Dr. Alice Kande, the acting Director General of the Kenya National Qualifications Authority (KNQA), reviewed the RPL implementation guidelines and policy framework.

Experts from the International Labor Organization (ILO), the Federation of Kenya Employers (FKE), and the Kenya National Federation of Jua Kali Associations collaborated on this review process.

Dr. Kande stressed that the RPL policy will coordinate the national curriculum development strategy to generate highly trained human resources that are in line with the demands of the labor market.

She emphasized the significance of academics and business collaborating to adapt curricula to business goals, ensuring that courses remain pertinent to the demands of the present and future labor markets.
