KNUT Calls on Teachers To Boycott KNEC Supervision and Marking

KNUT Calls on Teachers To Boycott KNEC Supervision and Marking

The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) has issued a warning that teachers will refuse to oversee and mark tests at the end of the year if they are not fairly compensated for the services they rendered during the national exams the previous year.

The union is demanding that the Ministry of Education take immediate action to resolve the issue in order to avoid delays during the exams that are due to take place in October and November, including the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) for students in Grade Six.

According to Knut Secretary-General Collins Oyuu, teachers who observed, invigilated, and marked the 2022 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) and Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exams have not yet received payment.

Oyuu urged the impacted instructors to postpone taking the tests this year until their objections were appropriately handled in order to fix the issue.

In Mvita Mombasa, the KNEC test containers were opened in the presence of Ezekiel Machogu, cabinet secretary for education. The professors and other exam administrators would be paid by the end of July, as Machogu had previously stated.

Dr. Belio Kipsang, principal secretary for elementary education, noted that the National Treasury has given the ministry Sh2 billion to pay off outstanding bills.

The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has experienced difficulty compensating exam officials due to financial constraints.

Despite an annual rise in applicants, government funding for national tests has remained unchanged.

Mr. Oyuu stressed that the promised money should have been included in the budget because the Exam Commission was given a deadline to fix the issue before involving the teachers further.

At the Knut’s Suba branch annual general meeting in Homa Bay County, Oyuu demanded the government address further welfare issues, including increased capitation to schools and a modification of Career Progression Guidelines, among other urgent concerns.

The KCPE and KPSEA exams will be held in 2023 from October 30 to November 2, and the KCSE will be held from November 3 to November 24.

The KCSE exams will be marked from November 27 to December 15.
