KNUT Clarifies the Teacher Strike in Holding

KNUT Specifies the Teacher Strike in Holding. The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) has denied reports that the nation’s educators are getting ready to strike in order to request a pay raise.

Collins Oyuu, secretary general of the KNUT, stated that the union wants to promote changing the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) for the duration of 2021–2025.

“No strike notices have been issued by me. “I told TSC to schedule a meeting with KNUT to discuss the circumstance pertinent to the CBA review for 2021–2025,” he continued.

Oyuu reported that they had received a favorable answer from the teachers’ company after giving TSC a 14-day notice.

He said, “We have a letter response from the TSC indicating their resolve to call a meeting as soon as possible and address the urgent issues.

After addressing at the Kisumu KNUT branch Annual General Meeting, Oyuu pledged teachers who are union members that they would make every attempt to address their problems during a news conference in Kisumu.

Oyuu highlighted that the 2021-2025 CBA they had signed with the TSC did not take financial considerations into account, hence a reassessment was required.

“The CBA contained a provision allowing the parties to review the contract they had signed. He said that other instructors had made fun of us by saying that we have CBAs for pregnancy.

The Salary and Remuneration Commission (SRC)’s two-year restriction had come to an end, the Secretary General underscored, giving them the legal right to review the contract they had previously signed.

Oyuu said they will consider the CBA’s non-financial components during the examination.

The KNUT will ask for a wage raise to make up for the anticipated Housing Levy deductions, and has prepared rules for salary review discussions.

Teachers would avoid the upcoming 3% deductions thanks to this wage increase.

Oyuu for TSC previously praised the strategic plan for 2023–2027, whose implementation would cost Ksh 70 billion.

Oyuu asserted that KNUT was keen to speak with the TSC in order to make sure that teacher wage was covered in the strategic plan.

Stakeholders reacted favorably to the prior Ksh 2 billion request from TSC for teacher promotion. The total was eventually lowered to Ksh 1 billion by the national treasury.

“We continue begging with the TSC to contact us and open up more time for conversations. We were prohibited from discussing financial things in 2021 by the Salaries and Remuneration Commission, but now that the ban has been lifted, we have called the TSC and given them 14 days to start negotiations and examine the non-financial CBA that was signed in 2021, Oyuu said.
