Knut gives TSC a 14-day deadline to complete the salary review.
Knut SG said that the Salaries Remuneration Commission had forbidden him from discussing any matters pertaining to contracts and salaries signed in 2021.
The union wants to meet with the commission and start a conversation now that it has lifted the restriction on negotiations.
The Teachers Service Commission has been granted 14 days by the Kenya National Union of Teachers to evaluate the collective bargaining agreement that was signed in 2021.
Teachers need a fair pay, according to Collin Oyuu, secretary general of Knut, because of the increasing cost of living being pushed by the Finance Act 2023.
“We have written a letter to the TSC and I have given them 14 days to bring us to the table so that we can start reviewing the monetary CBA that we signed in 2021,” Oyuu stated.
“We must not lose sight of the fact that the economic situation is so dire that we must sit down once more in order to put food on the table for the teachers.”
He said that Knut had been banned from negotiating anything regarding contracts for salaries signed in 2021 by the Salaries Remuneration Commission.

We commend TSC for introducing its strategy plan for 2023–2027. The roughly Sh70 billion that TSC would utilize to implement the strategic plan is very welcome because it was made clear that money will be used for purposes other than teacher pay, according to Oyuu.
He claimed that Knut was prepared to press TSC to the negotiating table in order to include teacher pay in the strategic plan.
The National Treasury cut the TSC’s initial demand for teachers’ allowances from Sh2 billion to Sh1 billion, which is regrettable. In order to restart negotiations, we still want our TSC to sit down with us, Oyuu stated.
A well-paid teacher is a good teacher, according to the secretary general.
“A teacher who is underpaid cannot deliver. We will restart the salary component of the negotiations that we skipped in 2021 if the government demands performance, he said.
