KUCCPS CEO Explains Why Students With C+ & Above Are Going for TVET Courses.
The Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) Chief Executive Officer, Agnes Wahome, has disclosed why students who qualify for university are rushing for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) courses.
During an interview on KBC on Tuesday, April 8, Wahome revealed that the demand for TVET courses had significantly increased due to the low enrolment requirements and the high demand in the labour market.
She explained that as of March this year, over 7,000 students who scored C+ and above in their Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) had applied for TVET courses.
“The demand is higher because a student who scores very good grades would rather go and start at a diploma level rather than take a university course,” Wahome revealed.
“As we speak, the students who we have already placed before we opened for university placement, 7,000 of those who had C+ and above, had already taken up TVET courses,” she added.
According to data by the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS), the high-demand courses preferred by most students in TVETs are electrical engineering, computer science, mechanical engineering, hospitality and culinary arts, and automotive engineering.
Wahome also dismissed claims that the TVET curriculum was outdated, maintaining that students in TVETs were tested more on practical skills rather than theory, giving learners an added advantage in the job market.
On application challenges, the KUCCPS CEO noted that the portal had been upgraded following a nationwide outcry last year after several learners complained of facing problems in submitting their courses.
She attributed last year’s hitches to the integration of the portal with the eCitizen payment platform, during which most learners reported delays in submitting their applications.
“The experience has been different because the first thing that we did was to avoid a situation where people go into the portal at the same time, so we have been staggering the placements,” Wahome stated.
Wahome’s clarification comes a fortnight after the placement service officially opened its portal for degree and TVET applications for the 2024 KCSE cohort.
While making the announcement on March 28, KUCCPS revealed that the portal would be open for four weeks, with the application window set to close on April 30.
