List of CBC Subjects Selected and Dropped Beginning in 2024. Beginning in January 2024, the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) will reduce the number of learning areas for learners in the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC).
On Tuesday, August 1, 2023, President William Ruto accepted and ordered the immediate implementation of the proposals of the Presidential Working Party on Education Reforms (PWPER).
According to the report, pupils would have fewer topics under the redesigned curriculum beginning in term one of next year. The number of learning areas for grades one through three will be reduced from nine to seven.
In addition, learning areas will be decreased from 12 to 8 for grades 4-6 and from 14 to 9 for grades 7-9.
Pre-primary will have five learning areas, while junior and senior school (grades seven to twelve) would have seven.
So yet, KICD has only released a new set of Junior School courses (Grades 7, 8, and 9). KICD will eventually add new learning parts for different Grades.
The new junior school obligatory and elective subjects are given below. Topics such as Health Education and Life Skills were omitted.
Students could previously select two optional subjects, but now they can only select one.
COMPULSORY SUBJECTS
1) English
2) Kiswahili or Kenya Sign Language (KSL)
3) Mathematics
4) Integrated Science
5) Social Studies
6) Business Studies
7) Agriculture
8) Pre-Technical and Pre-Career Studies
9) Religious Studies Education
i) Christian Religious Education (CRE)
ii) Islamic Religious Education (IRE)
iii) Hindu Religious Education (HRE)
OPTIONAL SUBJECTS
10 In optional subjects a student shall take one subject
i) Visual Arts
ii) Performing Arts
iii) Home Science
iv) Computer Science
v) Other Languages (Indigenous Language, French, Arabic, German, Sign Language)
NOTE
Physical Education (P.E.) shall be made mandatory for all students in order to facilitate the development of the Psychomotor Skills.
