List of Eligible CBC Subjects and Subjects Dropped Effective in 2024
List of CBC Subjects Dropped and Selected as of 2024. Beginning in January 2024, the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) will reduce the number of learning areas for students enrolled in the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC).
The recommendations of the Presidential Working Party on Education Reforms (PWPER) were adopted by President William Ruto on Tuesday, August 1, 2023, and he commanded their immediate implementation.
According to the report, pupils will be exposed to fewer topics under the altered curriculum starting in the first term of the next year. The number of learning areas will be reduced from nine to seven for Grades One through Three.
Additionally, the number of learning spaces will drop from 12 to 8 for grades 4-6 and from 14 to 9 for grades 7-9.
Pre-primary (grades k–6) will have five learning areas, while junior and senior high school (grades 7–12) will have seven.
Only a new set of courses for Junior School (Grades 7, 8, and 9) have been released by KICD thus far. New learning parts for further Grades will be available from KICD in the near future.
The following is a list of the new junior high mandatory and elective subjects. Life Skills and Health Education were removed as themes.
Before, students had the option of selecting two optional subjects, but now they can only select one.

Three) Math
4) Applied Science
Social Studies (No. 5)
Business Studies, sixth
7) Industry
Pre-technical and career studies are eighth.
9) Instruction in religious studies
i) CRE (Christian Religious Education)
ii) Religious Education in Islam (IRE)
Education in Hindu Religion (HRE)
Optional topics
10 A student must enroll in one elective subject.
1) The Visual Arts
Performative Arts
Home science (iii)
Computer science (iv)
Other Languages: French, Arabic, German, Sign Language, and Indigenous Language
NOTE
All pupils must participate in physical education (P.E.) in order to promote the growth of the psychomotor skills.
