List of Teachers Who Will Receive Awards on World Teachers Day

The registration, employment, promotion, transfer, and disciplinary management of teachers in all primary and secondary schools nationwide fall under the constitutional authority of the Teachers Service Commission. The Commission has developed plans to commemorate and reward Kenyan teachers in advance of World Teachers Day, a worldwide event honoring educators.

In 1994, UNESCO declared October 5 to be World Teachers Day in honor of a critical turning point in education history. A crucial step forward for educators worldwide was made on October 5, 1966, when an intergovernmental conference called by UNESCO in Paris endorsed the UNESCO/ILO recommendation addressing the Status of teachers in partnership with ILO.

The Teachers Service Commission plans to honor 500 educators who have excelled in educating and mentoring the children entrusted to their care on October 5 of this year.

The celebratory event will be presided over by the Teachers Service Commissioners and the Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Nancy Macharia, and will be shown live on Citizen TV on Thursday morning of this week.

The CEO Dr. Nancy Macharia thanked teachers at the previous year’s World Teachers Day celebration for their tenacity in overcoming difficulties brought on by the simultaneous disruptions of COVID-19 and the general election on August 9, assuring the continuation of school programming.

This year, teachers are having a difficult time making ends meet as they celebrate World Teachers Day since the rising cost of living has severely reduced their purchasing power. While the government did grant some pay increases, the implementation of the NSSF deductions and the housing charge offset these benefits, giving teachers little to celebrate.

The general perception is that their unions have sided too closely with the employer, who is seen as being indifferent to their problems.
