MACHOGU CONFIRMS TWO SUBJECTS TO SET MEAN GRADE FOR KCSE CANDIDATES IN 2023.

KCSE grading system 2023 . The 2023 KCSE Examination will implement a new grading system introduced by the Ministry of Education.

Students now need to excel in only two mandatory subjects: Mathematics and one language subject, which could be English, Kiswahili, or Kenyan Sign Language.

The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) will also consider the five best-performed subjects by the candidate, besides these two subjects.

This shift was unveiled by Education CS Ezekiel Machogu to enhance the number of students qualifying for higher education and vocational training programs at various levels.

Previously, KCSE exams were graded based on five mandatory subjects across three clusters,

including Mathematics, English, Kiswahili, two sciences, and a humanity subject.

Basic Education PS Belio Kipsang emphasized that this new grading system aims to align better with students’ interests and competencies.

It prevents a single subject from disproportionately impacting a student’s overall grade, especially for those pursuing fields like medicine or engineering.

The focus of this new system is to certify students rather than limit their entry into higher learning institutions.

It aims to address the disadvantages faced by students with various abilities and interests in the previous grading structure.

The Presidential Working Party on Education Reforms highlighted the limitations of the previous 8-4-4 system,

which heavily emphasized academics and rote learning, hindering the development of critical skills and values necessary for character formation.

This new system intends to rectify these issues and provide a more inclusive approach to grading.
