New university councils are appointed by Education CS Machogu.
For 14 universities that were operating without top governance organs, Cabinet Secretary for Education Ezekiel Machogu constituted university councils while rescinding appointments to some councils.
One of the top individuals selected to lead universities is Dr. Sara Ruto, the previous cabinet administrative secretary for education who has been nominated to chair the Kisii University council. Additionally appointed to the university council is Samson Muchelule.
A seasoned politician named Prof. Amukowa Anangwe to the University of Nairobi council. Prior to being ousted by Wycliffe Oparanya in 2002, he served as a minister in President Daniel Moi’s cabinet and as a member of Parliament. The other members of the UoN council are Dr. Sally Ngeringwony Toroitich, Caren Kerubo Omwenga, Dr. Darmain ole Warkae, and Ahmed Sheikh Abdullai.
They will take over for the council members chosen just a year ago on July 8, 2022. The occasion was presided over by renowned lecturer Prof. Miriam Khamadi Were. Members included Charles Ogolo, Flora Mtuweta Mighulo Maghanga, and Alison I.N. Kariuki.
In addition, Mr. Machogu replaced Esther Wanjiru Ndirangu with Harriet Chiggai on the South Eastern Kenya University Council. The council of the Law Society of Kenya is comprised of Ms. Chiggai.
The first council of the Kenya Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), which will be located at Konza Technopolis, would be presided over by Prof. Emmanuel Mutisya. The Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology serves as a model for the university that is now under construction and is affiliated with it. Members of the KAIST council include Prof. Washington O. Yotto, Dr. Collins K. Tanui, Eng Meshak Kidenda, and Purity Mureithi.
Some of the governance issues that have plagued public universities—some of which have been operating without—will be addressed by the selections made by the CS. Others lack substantive vice chancellors and deputy vice chancellors, while 28 are without chancellors.
The Public Service Commission posted job openings, narrowed the field of applicants, and in some cases had interviews, but the results were never disclosed. A proposal to amend the Universities Act would grant university councils the power to propose VCs and DVCs.
Chuka University’s university council has selected Prof. David T. K. Serrem to the position of chair. Zephania Rwanda Mbaka, Crispus Micheni Ndeke, Linet Kwamboka Maganda, Samuel Gacheru Gitonga, and Margaret Makhungu are the newest members of the council.
Ambeyi Ligavo, Isaac Kiprop Chebon, Joan Atieno Odawa, David Moranga Oyugi, and the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology council have all joined.
John H. Nderitu, Hassan Abdi Mohammed, Joel Yego, Prof. Angeline Nduku Kioko, and Velma Mudasa have been appointed to the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology’s council.
Charles Anyanga Malalah, Paul Bore, Marie Wanjeri Mugo, and Sereya Beatrice Maitoyo were appointed by Mr. Machogu to the Laikipia University Council, while Margaret Maimba’s appointment was revoked.
The Maasai Mara University’s council has been expanded to include Dickson Malanga Shikanga, Peter ole Nkuraiya, Dr. Susan Chebet, and Elizabeth Ayoo. The university has faced significant leadership issues recently.
Prof. Naftali Omolo Ongati is the new council chair for Maseno University. He will serve on the council alongside Ponyochi Kunyobo, Darius Getanda Isaboke, and Dr. Matilda Chemutai Sang.

The new Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology council will be led by Dr. Pamela Sitienei. The council now consists of Grace Wanja Kimotho, Dr. Kennedy Ochieng Olungo, Dorothy Kimeu, George Akolo Lutomia, and Susan Nyaboke Nyasinga; Jacqueline Muthoni Mwangi’s position has been terminated.
Additionally, Mr. Machogu revoked Dr. Samuel Ocholla, Renee Agnes Muthoni Kariuki, Nyachae Samuel Bernard Iria, and Noor Dahir Yusuf’s nominations to the Pwani University council. They were replaced by Fatma Mohammed, Sang Kiptanui David, Benjamin Mweri, and Samuel Kaloki. The board’s chair will be
The Technical University of Mombasa’s VC is set to retire, therefore the CS appointed Mohamed Loo, Alison Kariuki, Paul Mwasaaru Mwazumbo, Grace Nekoye Katasi, and Asma Hadi Awadh to the council. The appointment of Anne Sabania was cancelled.
Turkana University College’s new council will be led by Peter Salim Ndemo. The council is comprised of Nelisa Kagendo Mbaka, Jared Oyier, Shadrack Kemoi Lomuywara, Dr. Dominic Kimutai Biwott, and Carolyne Ekwom. The CS has cancelled the appointment of Anastacia W. Kamau.
