Nine subjects will be required for JSS students starting in 2024.

Beginning in January 2024, the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) will have fewer learning areas available to students, according to the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD).

The recommendations of the Presidential Working Party on Education Reforms (PWPER) were adopted by President William Ruto on Tuesday, August 1, 2023, and he commanded their immediate implementation.

According to the study, pupils enrolled in the new curriculum—the CBC—will begin taking fewer topics in 2024’s first term. For Grades One through Three, the learning areas will drop from nine to seven.

Additionally, the number of learning spaces for grades 4 through 6 will drop from 12 to 8 and for grades 7–9 from 14 to 9. The number of learning areas will be 7 in junior and senior school (grades seven to twelve) and 5 in pre-primary.

Only the new number of lessons for Junior Schools (Grades Seven, Eight, and Nine) have been released by KICD thus far. The new learning areas for other Grades will be released by KICD as soon as possible.

The new junior high school required and elective classes are listed below. Life skills and health education were the two disciplines that were eliminated.
