Pay increases for teachers as the SRC assigns new allowances
The Daily Subsistence Allowance (DSA) rates, often known as travel allowances, that are payable to public employees nationwide, including teachers, have lately undergone considerable revisions by the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC), notably for local travel purposes.
The main goal of these revised tariffs is to guarantee fair reimbursement for the costs people incur while travelling on business. This programme is described in a circular dated August 7, 2023, and personally signed by SRC Chairperson Lyn Mengich. It applies to all urban areas, county seat cities, and many other communities.
Let’s now explore the precise modifications that have occurred inside the various instructor grade categories:
- Teachers in Grades B5 and C1: The updated DSA has been set at Ksh6,300 for educators in Grades B5 (Primary Teacher II) and C1 (Secondary Teacher III, Lecturer III, Primary Teacher I).
- Teachers for Grades C2, C3, C4, and C5: Teachers for Grades C2 (Secondary Teacher II, SNE Teacher II-Primary, Lecturer II, Senior Teacher II), C3 (Secondary Teacher I, Lecturer I, SNE Teacher I-Primary, SNE Teacher II-Secondary, Senior Teacher I), C4 (Senior Lecturer IV, Senior Master IV, SNE Senior Teacher – Primary, SNE Teacher I

- Teachers of grades D1, D2, D3, D4, and D5: The higher rungs of the teaching profession, including those in Grade D1 (Senior Master II, Deputy Principal III, Senior Headteacher, Senior Lecturer II, Curriculum Support Officer I), D2 (Deputy Principal II, Senior Master I, Senior Lecturer I), D3 (Principal, Deputy Principal I), D4 (Senior Principal), and D5 (Chief Principal), will benefit from an increased DSA of Ksh14,000 per year.
It’s also important to remember that the SRC’s circular explicitly indicates that all earlier circulars pertaining to the public service’s retreat allowance, taskforce allowance, sitting allowance for institutional internal committees, and DSA (Local and Foreign Travel) have been superseded by this one.
With the help of this extensive adjustment, federal servants will receive pay that is clear and equitable, effectively meeting their need for travel for work-related purposes.
