VC of Kisii University.Ten of the top university professors in the nation have been selected to participate in interviews for the Vice Chancellor position at Kisii University.
The Public Service Commission (PSC) reduced the candidate pool from 16 applicants from seven counties to 10.
After ten years in the post, John Akama, the university’s first vice chancellor, retired on Friday.
In a statement, the university’s management said: “Today marks the end of our first Vice Chancellor, Prof. John Akama’s term, as he hands over the instruments of leadership to the Acting Vice Chancellor, Prof. Joseph Mailutha.”
When Kisii University College was elevated to the status of a full university in 2013, Prof. Akama handled the process as the institution’s first principal.

The current Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs of Moi University, Prof. Nathan Oyori Ogechi, is a front-runner to take over as the institution’s second Vice Chancellor.
Kiswahili, Ekegusii, and Sheng codes, as well as translation and communication, are Prof. Ogechi’s areas of expertise in the study of African languages and linguistics.
Since January 2022, Prof. Joseph Chacha has served as the president of Maasai Mara University, another eminent scholar from the tribe. He officially retired on May 31, 2023. VC of Kisii University.
Vice Chancellor Professor Douglas Shitanda comes in third.
Prof. Bernard Moirongo, a former deputy vice chancellor for finance at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, is another candidate.
Another candidate, Prof. Elijah I. Omwenga, holds a degree in computer science from the University of Nairobi with a focus on information systems.
He teaches in the School of Computing and Informatics at the University of Nairobi.
Prof. Constantine Matoke Nyamboga has a particular interest in information and knowledge management. He graduated from a prestigious university with a doctorate in information science.
During his tenure as a visiting professor at Kisii University (2009–2012), he held the position of the school’s first dean. He served as the Kisii Campus’s inaugural principal of Mount Kenya University prior
