Reduced P1 teacher deployment requirements to address the JSS teacher shortage.
Since the start of Grade 7 in January 2023, primary school teachers in the majority of schools have been utelized to teach in secondary schools.
The P1 instructors were asked to handle grade 7 courses in the event of a deficit by the Teacher’s Service Commission.
Additionally, the Commission has been placing P1 instructors with advanced degrees in junior high and high schools.
Some of the PTE teachers from the first cohort who applied by February 6th, 2023, have been sent to junior schools to teach Grade 7 students after having their paperwork verified by their Sub County Directors and receiving deployment (posting) letters.
Even so, the Commission has resisted pressure to relax the requirements for deployment to junior secondary schools.
The following qualifications are currently required for instructors who want to be assigned to JSS.
Currently, primary school teachers who want to work at JSS must hold a secondary school diploma.
The prerequisites for p1 instructor deployment to JSS are listed below.
The instructor must be
a teacher who is officially recognized by the Teachers Service Commission.
ii) A teacher who works in elementary school leaves the Teachers Service Commission.
iii) not now undergoing a disciplinary procedure or serving an interdiction.
iv) Possessing a diploma in education and at least two teaching courses currently offered in the school curriculum (either under 8-4-4 or CBC) with a C+ grade each, or two (2) principles and one (1) subsidiary pass at “A” Level.
Teachers who have earned a minimum grade of C (plain) on the KCSE (or its equivalent) and have finished both a Bachelor’s and a Diploma in Education are qualified.
v) The degree certificate you possess must be for a bachelor’s in education. Holders of a Bachelor of Education (Primary Option) are ineligible.
vi) Expressing a desire to be sent to a junior secondary school and requesting to be put on a list provided by headquarters.
The commission has been asked to allow primary school instructors with a KCSE mean grade C (simple) and a degree secondary option but no diploma to be assigned to junior secondary despite the above rigorous request, which are not posted by many.
According to the most recent information, teachers with various degrees and diplomas have also pushed TSC to allow them to work with junior secondary school children.
Despite the committee’s refusal to accept these teachers, it’s possible that external pressure forced them to.
This is due to the government’s failure to hire enough teachers as Grade 7 children will start Grade 8 in January of the following year.
It will be difficult to address the teacher learner ratio in junior second schools unless TSC relaxes deployment limitations to address the significant teacher shortage that is anticipated for the upcoming school year.
