Ruto authorizes a 75% fee reduction at the Open University

Ruto mandates a 75% fee reduction at the Open University. The first virtual institution in Kenya, according to President William Ruto, would employ low operating expenses to reduce tuition by up to 75%.

The President stated that he and the recently appointed chancellor, James Mwangi, had devised a framework that will lower training expenses to a small portion of what traditional universities charge on Thursday when granting a charter to the Open University of Kenya (OUK).

“At first, the vice chancellor reassured me that the tuition would be half that of a typical institution.” Dr. Ruto asserted that “we’ve agreed with (chancellor) James that we want it to cost a fourth, not half,” and that “he’s already told me how we’re going to do it.”

The president of the state claimed that because it will give underprivileged individuals access to higher education, the measure is consistent with Kenya Kwanza’s Bottom-up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA).

Dr. Ruto declared, “Today, Kenya makes history by opening the doors of the university to anyone who wants to pursue a higher education from the convenience of their homes, offices, kiosks, farms, or other workplaces.”

“Those who do not want to or cannot afford to give up other interests in order to pursue a university education can now enroll on more favorable terms.”

The first group of students to attend the online university will be accepted in the following month. It is anticipated to charge between Sh10,400 and Sh10,900 per module, depending on the course, according to research provided by the technical committee that created the establishment’s road map.

The study estimates that post-diploma courses will cost Sh130,000 annually. At the OUK, located at Konza Technopolis in Machakos, a full-time student will take four to six courses overall.

According to President Ruto, the government has gotten up to Sh100 billion from unnamed partners for development over the next five years for Konza phase two.
