Salgaa Students Die in Evening Road Accident; Others are Hurt

On Saturday night, a vehicle accident in the Salgaa district along the Nakuru-Eldoret highway claimed the lives of two students and the matatu’s driver.
Witnesses said that the truck struck the matatu as it was moving from Eldoret to Nakuru.

15 people, including some students coming home after the conclusion of their school’s half-term break, were reportedly aboard the PSV, which was overloaded.

Other accident victims were swiftly sent for treatment and admittance to several hospitals in the county of Nakuru.

Traffic marshals moved to avoid a traffic jam as the highly damaged wreckage of the matatu was pulled to the side of the road.

Police were told to step up enforcement and stop drivers who were breaking the law because there was an increase in people using the road to access different cities from the highway.

Drivers were warned against being careless, especially with the Naivasha Safari Rally going on and students heading off for their midterm breaks.

Midterm exams were delayed by the Ministry of Education for Thursday, June 22. After being allowed to go home on June 27, 2023, students won’t be allowed to go home again until July 1, 2023.

Parents had anticipated receiving their children on June 29th before the changes.

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) reported 1,670 traffic-related fatalities between January and May of 2023.

The NTSA reports that there were 77 fewer fatalities than there were over the same time period in 2022 (1,756).

Of the 1,679 fatalities, 571 were caused by pedestrians, 449 by motorcyclists, 323 by passengers, and 149 by drivers.

The NTSA recommended increasing the number of traffic police officers, improving road infrastructure, and raising public awareness to prevent traffic accidents.
