Schools will close earlier than normal; explanations
Public elementary and secondary schools may end the second term earlier, say administrators and headteachers.
According to the school calendar published by the Ministry of Education, schools will be dismissed on August 11, 2023.
However, the managers of the schools claim that if the government does not deliver all of the capitation money, this won’t be possible.
Since the government did not grant schools their full capitation payment for the 2021/22 fiscal year, the institution lost almost Sh5,000.
Schools may suffer the same fate this year (2022/2023) because the government still owes Sh4,300 for each student.
Indimuli Kahi, the head of the Kenya Secondary Schools Heads Association, claims that if government funding for free primary education and free day secondary education is discontinued for a second year in a row, schools risk losing their access to those monies.
These money must be deposited before the period ends, according to Indimuli. Beginning on August 12, schools will be closed for a three-week break that will end on August 27.
The institutions will have two weeks to conduct final exams, educate, and learn.
Johnson Nzioka, the head of the Kenya Primary Schools Heads Association, asserted that schools are struggling to carry out their regular operations as a result of the government’s underfunding of education.
He stated, “Closing early will be one way to avoid a crisis on some days when we wouldn’t otherwise have enough money to cover operations.”
Indimuli claims that on June 12, the schools each received Sh4,150 in capitation.
Indimuli claims that “We did not receive the full capitation amount in the fiscal years 2021/22 and we still have not received the full amount for the current fiscal year, 2022/23.”
According to Indimuli, the ripple effect has left schools in debt and with fewer resources to support the entire student body.
“We are in a very delicate situation where schools are headed for the end-of-term exams which need some financing, and we also need to pay the non-teaching staff,” he added.
