SRC reassures ECDE instructors on salary deductions
The Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) teachers’ pay were allegedly evaluated downward in a circular that went viral online, according to the Salary and Remuneration Commission (SRC).
On Thursday, the SRC Chairman Lynne Mengich testified before the Senate Education Committee and claimed that the circular had inaccuracies and was misleading.
The SRC Chair testified before the Senate Committee on Education, which is chaired by Senator Joe Nyutu, and Dr. Erick Mutai, chair of the Council of Governors Education Committee, reaffirmed that they cannot evaluate pay lower.
“We came to find out more about the new pay scale as reported in the media. The SRC structure from 2021 is the one that is used, and it is not based on any actual events. No ECDE teacher’s pay will be lowered to Kes. 7,000, Mengich pledged.
Governor Mutai of Kericho County informed the committee that 43,874 ECDE instructors had been hired by the counties.
He also denied allegations that ECDE teachers had their salaries reduced.
“I have no idea where this new structure originated. No governor will put the bogus letter into effect, he claimed.
Mutai asserts that governors value ECDE instructors. He also said that the program’s funding costs about Kes. 10 billion annually.
Sadly, an estimated Kes. 10,828,076,256 is allotted annually for the function of education, which primarily combines with women, youth, labor, ICT, and social services. The cost of implementing the scheme of service is Kes. 2,082,067,231.80, or 16%, more than the overall budgetary allotment for the Education Ministry, according to Mutai.
The two were brought in, according to committee chairperson Joe Nyutu, to provide clarity on the following conflict among ECDE professors regarding the matter.
We believed this was unacceptable because there were rumors that ECDE professors would be paid Kes. 7,000, he said.
According to Nyutu, his committee is trying to make sure that every ECDE teacher has a stable job with a pension.
The Council of Governors urged the Senate to appropriate sufficient National Government finances for early childhood education and to cost the subject.
