Students will learn their scholarship category next week, according to Ringera.
Only 23% of students who have been accepted into degree, diploma, and arts programs have finished their applications for university funding on the Higher Education Funding (HEF) website as the September 7th application deadline draws near.
The CEO of the Higher Education Loans Board (Helb), Charles Ringera, stated that the total number of applications received has not yet reached 100,000 in an interview with the Star on Tuesday.
For our planning purposes, Ringera said, “We need a significant number of kids to have filed applications… There have been an additional 10,000 applications added to the 65,000 we currently have.
He continued by saying that after the government receives a minimum of 100,000 applications, students will be informed of the financing category to which they have been assigned.
Ringera continued, “We estimate that by next week, we will have already surpassed the 100,000 application mark and will be able to allocate students among the financing categories.
The president of the Loans Board also said that the government will postpone the application deadline past September 7th if they did not receive a sufficient number of submissions.
We have plans in place to extend the deadline if, by September 7, we have not got the anticipated 265,000 applications or so, according to Ringera.
According to the new funding model, students who are in need of financial assistance are split into four categories: vulnerable, severely needy, needy, and less needy.
The distribution of monies within these categories will be determined by an evaluation of the financial situation of the students’ families. This strategy attempts to give scholarships to students from low-income families first, while HELB will continue to provide loans to students from more affluent homes as in the past.
Any student who did not apply for financial aid through the former financing scheme must do so using the new portal.
