Students Without IDs Are Issued Directives by the HELB Boss

Over 2,000 students who have filed for aid but do not have National Identity cards received clarity from the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) on how money will be released to them on Monday.

Charles Ringera, the chief executive officer, said in a statement that the money would be withheld from the student until the student had a legitimate ID. Both the student and their parents must submit their personal identity numbers when requesting a loan through HELB.

Ringera called attention to the fact that the board is powerless to take action because it is legally forbidden from lending to people under the age of 18.

“An ID is important for identifying the identity of the student, especially when they are repaying the loan,” the speaker stated. “An ID is necessary to verify the student’s identity.”

The CEO additionally urged students to apply for the government-publicized subsidies, assuring them that there were plenty of resources available to suit their needs.

Ringera emphasized the new funding model’s timely adoption to guarantee that each student has access to the resources they need to advance their studies as she further expressed her faith in it.

The CEO also made it plain to the students that, in contrast to the previous framework, they would remain have access to the funds that had been granted to them even if they changed their major or attended a different institution.

The CEO estimates that by the year 2028, the board will have spent Ksh210 billion supporting pupils adopting the new approach. 75 billion for scholarships and 145 billion for loans are included.

It is predicted that during the month of September, at least 285,698 students will enroll in higher education programs. All pupils will be accommodated, the Chief Executive Officer emphasized, allaying any concerns that certain kids might be excluded from the program.

According to the new system for allocating funding, pupils are divided into four categories: vulnerable, severely in need, in need, and less in need.

Ringera emphasized that all of these various kinds of students will receive financial aid from the government, and that it will treat them equally.
