Teachers will receive pay increases as TSC, unions agree.

A 7–10% pay increase for teachers has been agreed upon by the two main teachers’ organizations and the Teachers Service Commission (TSC).

The 2021–2025 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) includes a salary rise that is in line with the Salaries and Remuneration Commission’s (SRC) recommendation to raise the compensation of all State employees.

The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT), the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET), and the Kenya Union of Special Needs Education Teachers (KUSNET) successfully negotiated a pay raise for tutors that will take effect in August, according to a TSC announcement made on Monday.

A separate addition to the 2021–2025 CBA has also been approved and signed. The purpose of this amendment is to shield educators from recent statutory deductions and rising living expenses.

The unions and TSC leadership recently spoke at the Kenya School of Government to discuss the proposed pay raise. TSC’s offer of 2.4 to 9.5 percent was turned down by KUPPET, KNUT, and KUSNET because they thought it was insufficient.

They claimed the hike was below the seven to ten percent increase that the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) had recommended for all civil officials, including teachers and members of the security forces.

The settlement has now been reached following numerous conversations. The unions have also agreed to introduce ongoing promotions for teachers, beginning with the 36,000 positions that have already been posted nationally. This agreement is in addition to the salary increase.

To provide equal pay for teachers across the nation, house allowance harmonization with Nairobi rates would also be started. Increased housing allowances will be given to teachers in particular clusters and regions.

Teachers from Teachers Training Colleges (TTC) will not compete with secondary teachers for TTC positions because TTC instructors receive priority in promotions.
