TSC fully confirms 46,000 intern teachers to pnp terms.
A total of 46,000 teachers who were serving internships have finally been confirmed to permanent and pensionable (pnp) terms by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC).
Teachers who were employed under contract have recently been transferred to PNP positions.
In anticipation of their conversion in January 2025, the Commission has already sent employment and appointment letters to the teachers.
Junior secondary school teachers had to go on protest across the country to pressure the government into confirming them to PNP conditions, thus the conversion was not without its challenges.
This is the biggest conversion to intern teaching that has ever occurred. Thanks to President William Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza administration plan, it has increased the number of teachers on PNP by 56,000 since 2022.
46,000 instructors were employed by TSC and participating in internships.
In February 2023, 21,550 junior school and 4,000 primary school intern instructors were hired.
In April 2023, 450 secondary school intern instructors were hired. In September 2023, 2,000 primary school and 18,000 junior school intern instructors were hired.
TSC CEO Dr. Nancy Macharia disclosed that the intern teachers’ confirmation to PNP was almost finished at the KCSE 2024 exam monitoring.
Macharia, accompanied by PS Belio Kipsang and other education stakeholders, stated, “I would like to confirm that we are nearing the end of completing the conversion of the 46,000 intern teachers, some of whom have served for two years.”
When schools resume for the first term next week, the instructors will have employment and appointment letters to begin working on permanent terms in January 2025.
Teachers will receive higher pay along with other advantages including comprehensive health insurance, paid time off, and loans.
After statutory deductions, the net compensation for a primary school teacher is Sh 32,000, while the net pay for a graduate secondary school teacher, including those in junior secondary, is Sh 47,000.
A primary school intern teacher used to make Sh 13,000 a month, whereas secondary school teachers received Sh 17,000 after deductions for SHIF, NSSF, and House Levy.
In October, TSC posted a total of 46,000 permanent teaching positions, with 6,000 of the positions being in elementary schools, 39,550 in junior schools, and 450 in high schools.
Including non-interns, some 314,000 teachers applied for the positions. However, based on the recruitment criteria it made public, the Commission promoted all of the intern teachers and guaranteed them permanent positions.
Serving intern teachers in elementary, middle, and high schools received 50 points from TSC.
The junior secondary intern teacher with the lowest tenure received a maximum score of 62 points on the scoreboard, while the non-intern teacher with the lowest score received a maximum score of 45 points.
According to TSC’s prior statements, teachers will only be hired on a permanent basis following their completion of the internship.
To enhance junior secondary education, TSC hired 20,000 teachers for internships in January.
To replace instructors who left the service due to natural attrition, TSC is also now hiring 8,707 teachers on permanent and pensionable terms.
