TSC Hardship Zones and Allowances Updated

The Teachers Service Commission updates hard-hit areas frequently. Areas of hardship are determined using a variety of characteristics. Arid and semi-arid environments are some of these variables.

A hardship allowance is given to teachers in these locations, which encourages them to work in these dangerous environments.

Teachers working in Nyandarua, Muranga, Kandara, Kigumo, and Nyahururu counties will not be eligible for hardship payments. Since their infrastructure has improved, these areas have been taken off the list of those experiencing poverty.

Determined hardship areas are based on a number of factors, including:

inadequate social amenities and services.frequent security threats and insecurities.
climate-related disasters like floods and droughts.inadequate foodinadequate networks for communication and transportation.The following counties are listed as hardship areas:

Turkana county
Mandera county
Samburu county
Wajir county
West pokot county
Narok county
Garissa county
Marsabit county
Isiolo county
Tana river county
Lamu county
Kilifi county
Kwale county
Taita Taveta county

4 areas have been added to the hardship areas list due to the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA). These areas include:
Baringo North. This includes Tiaty East, Tiaty West and Marigat
Kajiado County including Loitoktok, Mashuuru and Kajiado West.
Kitui County including Mumoni, Mutito North and Teikuru.

Homa Bay County including Suba and Mbita.
The hardship allowance is not paid as a percentage of basic pay. It is only paid at a flat rate.
