TSC Has Plans To Promote P1 Teachers To JSS in Advance

Plans by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to promote P1 teachers to instruct in junior secondary schools are well underway (JSS).

In an effort to solve the present teacher shortage in junior secondary schools (JSS) across the nation, the Commission plans to promote graduate teachers from elementary schools to teach in JSS.

Before deciding where to place instructors, the Commission is reportedly now gathering applications from qualified educators.

This comes after the Commission’s hiring drive, which resulted in 30,550 new hires who have now reported to their respective JSS schools for the start of the new school year.

There has been a teacher shortage in public schools across the nation during the past week as a result of the transition of thousands of students from primary school to JSS.

Due to headteachers’ concerns, the majority of JSS have not begun teaching Grade 7 students.

The TSC CEO acknowledged that there was a teacher shortage in JSS but claimed that the government was already addressing the issue.

She stated that graduate instructors who are currently employed as primary school teachers could submit applications through the Commission’s webpage.

Once the mapping is complete, “We shall use the data acquired to transfer qualified instructors from elementary schools to junior secondary schools,” stated Dr. Nancy Macharia.

The exercise was completed up until February 6 at midnight, at which point it was terminated.

Macharia added that recently recruited teachers had reported t JSS and termed the current shortage of teachers as a ‘teething challenge’ as learners transitioned to JSS.

THE TSC CEO was addressing members of the press at SawelaLodge in Naivasha where she met members of the Senate committee on education.

The requirements for application for deployment were as follows.

  • At least grade C+ (Plus) mean grade at the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) or its equivalent.
  • At least grade C+ (Plus) in the two teaching subjects at Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) or its equivalent.
  • At least 8 units in each of the two teaching subjects.
  • Must be serving as a primary school teacher under TSC.

The TSC CEO discussed the delocalization policy for teachers, stating that it had an impact on 14,000 instructors and that TSC had taken equity into consideration when making the transfers.

The shortage of teachers at JSS, according to Josepth Nyuthu, chair of the Senate Committee on Education, is a troubling issue that needs the state’s help to be resolved.

When the second batch of kids enrolls in JSS, where there is already a teacher deficit, Murang’a Senator warned that the problem could get worse the next year.

When more children enroll in junior secondary schools the next year, the problem could get worse, he warned. “The government should act quickly and hire more teachers in JSS.”

The Senator also spoke out against the Salaries and Remuneration Commission’s (SRC) decision to cut ECDE teachers’ pay, claiming it was unfair to the educational community.

According to him, the Senate would pressure the government to fund ECDE and vocational training centers with Kes. 2 billion each fiscal year for each county.

The SRC’s plan, according to Nyutu, is absurd and could harm stakeholders in the education system’s morale.

“We completely condemn the SRC’s proposal to reduce ECDE teacher compensation as this is an insult to the education sector,” he stated.
