Through replacements, the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has begun hiring teachers on permanent and pensionable (pnp) terms.
Teachers without jobs will need to figure out how to obtain employment letters from their Members of Parliament (MPs).
The Commission has sent teacher employment letters to more than 290 lawmakers and other government-aligned politicians.
Speaking to Knut delegates at their Annual Delegates Conference (ADC) in Mombasa last week, TSC CEO Dr. Nancy Macharia said that 8,707 teachers will be hired on PNP terms through replacement in January.
Macharia claims that these are not new posts within the service, but rather replacements for teachers who have retired, died, or quit.
According to her, candidates for 5,862 positions would be those who possess the Primary Teacher Education (PTE) credential, also referred to as P1.
According to Macharia, there would be 21 openings for junior secondary schools and 2,824 openings for secondary schools.
However, by permitting politicians to supervise the exercise, the Commission has gotten off to a bad start.
In September of 2023, the Treasury allocated Sh 2.5 billion to TSC for the purpose of hiring and replacing 6,000 teachers.
However, the Commission quietly assigned the slots to lawmakers and Members of Parliament to fill respective constituencies rather than officially announcing the openings.
To get a job, some teachers had to part with up to Sh400,000. Even though the replacements were incompetent, corruption and cronyism continued.
This action is thought to be Kenya Kwanza’s way of rewarding politicians who support its agenda.
TSC reverted to its gloomy past, when politicians meddled in Commission operations, such as the hiring of teachers, which was fraught with discrimination and widespread corruption.

Without completing an internship, a few of the teachers were hired on permanent and pensionable conditions.
Ezekiel Machogu, the Cabinet Secretary for Education at the time, was in charge of the backdoor teacher recruitment.
During an event in Kisii County, Machogu was seen live giving job letters to teachers. Sylvanus Osoro, another politician, was also discovered in his home with a number of employment letters.
The president of Kenya dismissed his cabinet, including former chief secretary Ezekiel Machogu, as a result of the Gen Z protests against poor governance.
Before being hired on a permanent basis, teachers must first complete a minimum of one year of internship, according to TSC.
The purpose of the one-year Teacher Internship Program is to prepare and maintain the skills of those preparing to enter the teaching profession.
The program’s goal is to place jobless registered instructors in educational institutions where they will receive coaching, mentoring, and exposure to real-world teaching situations.
Although most of the present intern teachers have been with the company for two years, the internship will last for twelve months.
An internship with a teacher is not a paid position. However, a monthly salary of Kshs. 20,000/= will be available to interns affiliated with junior secondary institutions.
Statutory deductions such as NHIF, housing levy, and NSSF, if applicable, will be applied to the stipend’s payment.
Teacher interns who successfully complete the internship program will receive a certificate.
TSC recently finished hiring 20,000 instructors for junior secondary schools on internship conditions. In January, the teachers will be assigned to schools.
It has been confirmed that 46,000 teachers who are now on internship terms would be working on new terms starting in January 2025.
