TSC will confirm teachers’ acting authority after six months according to a new rule
There is now respite for teachers hired by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), since a new measure has been submitted in Parliament. The Commission must confirm teachers within six months of their acting status, according to a measure sponsored by Embakasi Central MP Benjamin Gathiru. Teachers have frequently served in administrative capacities in the past without being formally confirmed in those posts.
The TSC is alleged to have failed to confirm teachers who have served in administrative capacities for a considerable amount of time by the Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (Kuppet).
Without being in an administrative role, it is difficult for classroom instructors to advance due to the present career progression rules (CPG). Omboko Milemba, the national head of Kuppet, voiced worries about this state of affairs and referred to it as labor exploitation.
Additionally, the Labor Committee of the National Assembly has thought of proposing an amendment capping the retirement age at 55, which would have an impact on a sizable portion of the civil servants set to retire in the following five years. If adopted, this idea could have a significant impact on the government’s finances, notably in relation to the pension cost.
According to the Public Service Commission (Amendment) Bill, 2023, if a candidate meets all requirements for the position, they may be appointed in an acting capacity for up to six months. Any acting appointment that was made without the required credentials would be immediately withdrawn by the Public Service Commission.
