UPDATED TSC REQUIREMENTS FOR P1 TEACHERS TO TEACH IN JUNIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL

The implementation of the competency-based curriculum has led to a shift in workload from primary to secondary schools, resulting in a significant reduction in the burden on primary schools.

After students pass the Kenya Certificate of Basic Education (KCPE) examination, those currently in the sixth form under the 8-4-4 system will transition from Form 6 to Form 7 in 2023. This marks the beginning of their secondary education.

Grades 7, 8, and 9 are now taught in junior high schools. Students move to secondary school in 2023 after successfully completing the 6th-grade national exam, in accordance with the new Competency Based Curriculum (CBC) under the 2-6-3-3-3 system.

In response to these changes, the Ministry of Education and Culture has designated certain primary schools to be transformed into secondary schools. The Junior High School wing (JSS) will be upgraded as part of this process, with improvements in infrastructure as a key focus.

The infrastructure of educational institutions is to be developed by consolidating registered schools that are located close to each other. In some cases, elementary and middle schools are housed within the same building.

To address the resulting shortage of teachers, the Ministry of Education and the Department of Teachers have decided to redeploy primary and secondary school teachers to secondary schools. High school teachers will now oversee both primary and secondary students.

Elementary school teachers with specific qualifications, including Diplomas and Degrees in Special Needs Education, Early Childhood Development Education, or Secondary Education, are now eligible to teach middle school students.

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has also indicated that teachers with qualifications at various levels, including degrees, higher degrees, postgraduate degrees, graduate degrees, master’s, and PhDs, will be involved in teaching at Secondary Schools (JSS) as part of this educational restructuring.
