View CBC’s Latest Kenyan Reforms (JSS)

Several important changes to the educational system are scheduled to take effect beginning in January 2024, including the following:

1. In 2024, children in grade 8 will be able to study in the same classrooms that are currently used for class 8.
2. Beginning with the forthcoming school year, the phrase “junior school” will be used interchangeably with “secondary school.”
3. In order to promote consistency throughout the school, each headteacher is responsible for ensuring that the students continue to wear the same uniform. This unified policy is in effect from Pre-Primary 1 all the way through Grade 9, representing a unified administrative strategy.
4. It is a strict prohibition for principals to ask parents to buy new uniforms for pupils who are now in the sixth grade but will be moving up to the seventh grade next year.
5. The following are included in the most recent version of the list of required subjects:

• In the English
• Kiswahili (Kiswa)
• Number Theory
• Science That Is Integrated
• Sociology and Anthropology
• The Study of Business
• The Farming Industry

— Studies That Are Both Pre-Technical And Pre-Career

• Formal Instruction in Religion

1. Students are required to select one subject from the following list in order to fulfill the requirements for the category of optional subjects:

• Science Done at Home
• The Field of Computer Science

1. In order to facilitate the growth of their psychomotor abilities, it is mandatory for each and every student to take part in physical education, also known as PE.

These changes, which won’t be implemented until January 2024, will completely alter the educational environment.
