Why A-Pangani Student Was Accepted into Diploma Program By KUCCPS
Agnes Wahome, Chief Executive Officer of Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS), disclosed that a Pangani Girls High School student’s course selections led to her enrolling in a diploma program at a Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institution.
The unnamed girl, who received an A- on the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) in 2022, bemoaned the fact that she had chosen reputable science programs at the top colleges in the nation in accordance with her 40-point cluster.
She said she wanted to study dentistry and listed the highly sought-after program as her top two choices. She chose Nursing at the University of Nairobi to complete her top four selections before choosing Medicine as her third preference.
However, after reviewing the placement results, it was discovered that the student had been assigned to the Kiambu Institute of Science and Technology, where she would be pursuing a diploma in Nutrition.

“I was astonished because I had received an A- and intended to attend a reputable institution with a decent course when I was called to Kiambu Institute to pursue a diploma in Nutrition and Dietetics.
“The courses that will be offered when they open the site for the third iteration won’t be marketable for the grade I got. My applied courses will already have been taken. She sighed, “I am upset because I worked so hard for an A-.
Wahome observed that while the candidate met the requirements for some of the course titles she chose based on her strong academic performance, the universities she chose to take the courses in required higher cut-off marks.
For instance, because there were only 50 spots available in Dentistry and there was a tremendous demand, the university only accepted students who received straight As. Medicine, the student’s third option, was also overly competitive and required a higher cut-off score.
The University of Nairobi (UoN), which was her last choice, required 43 cut-off points for her fourth choice, nursing, which she might have studied at another university.
“Unfortunately, we have less than 50 seats available for the student who chose to major in dentistry with an A-. This student had a cluster weight of 40 whereas other dentistry students received straight As, according to Wahome.
“There was no way she could have succeeded in all of these with the choice of dentistry in two institutions, medicine as her third choice, and nursing at UoN as her fourth choice. Her following options were in diploma. It immediately transports you there because Kiambu Institute was her first pick for nutrition.
She continued by saying that KUCCPS prioritizes pupils’ initial selections. If someone chooses incorrectly, the algorithm then moves on to the second option, followed by the fourth as a result.
“The system then takes you to your diploma choice if you had chosen Diploma while you were eligible for Degree and you missed all of your four choices,” she continued.
Wahome encouraged the student to select her preferred subject by taking advantage of the third revision. In a week, the portal will be reopened.
285,167 students submitted placement applications to 69 universities, 210 TVET institutions, and three Secondary Teacher Training Colleges, according to KUCCPS.
Surprisingly, 136,592 applicants for diploma programs and 23,125 applicants for degree programs both chose not to submit applications. There are 483,457 open positions in TVETs and universities.
