TSC: North Eastern Counties Vacancies Ignored by Unemployed Teachers

According to the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), qualified unemployed teachers in the North Eastern counties are avoiding the region’s teaching openings.

TSC CEO Nancy Macharia disclosed during her Tuesday hearing before the National Assembly Education Committee that 35,790 of the 36,000 positions that had been advertised in December 2022 had been filled. However, 210 openings for intern teachers in the counties of Mandera, Wajir, and Garissa remain unfilled as a result of a lack of applications.

According to Macharia, there are still 174 open positions in the counties of Mandera, Wajir, and seven in Garissa. Even though the 210 positions were re-advertised in May 2023, no candidates from the three regions showed interest.

We have contacted regional authorities, written to governors, and made significant use of various forms of advertising, said Macharia.

The committee asked why, in spite of the Commission’s ads, certain positions were still vacant. Teachers are hesitant to accept internship positions in some places, according to Macharia, because of job insecurity and terrible working circumstances.

Numerous terrorist assaults have taken place in the North Eastern region throughout the years, killing many instructors. This has caused the delocalization policy to receive harsh criticism.

Delocalization guidelines A resolution put out by Lurambi MP Titus Khamala in November 2022 resulted in the elimination of the TSC’s 2018-introduced program.

To stop such attacks on non-local teachers, the motion suggested that educated educators from terrorist-prone regions be stationed in their own communities.

Macharia recognized that the Commission’s budgetary resources are insufficient to cover the cost of hiring enough instructors to address the shortage.

To address the issue of insecurity in the North Eastern region, the MPs declared their desire to call Interior CS Kithure Kindiki.

This is a serious situation that our committee needs to address. To address the issue of insecurity in North Eastern and secure the protection of teachers, we need to convene the CS for internal security, said the committee.

Macharia reaffirmed that in order to address the issue, the Commission has worked to keep teachers in their preferred subcounties where openings exist in order to save relocation costs. She highlighted that all candidates are welcome to apply for the positions.
