Impact of the SRC’s Review of Allowances on Different Sectors
The Attorney General, the Controller of the Budget, and other organizations have been approached by the Salaries and Remunerations Commission (SRC) to gather their thoughts on reevaluating public sector allowances.
Commission Chair Lyn Mengich issued a circular on August 8, 2023, stating the justification for the choice to bring justice and transparency to the allowances system as well as to offer direction to the government on how to handle the compensation bill.
The second round of the panel’s investigation, according to her, has started and will mainly focus on retreat, sitting, taskforce, and daily subsistence payments. In the end, the first stage was finished in 2022.
Copies of the circular were distributed to the Chief Justice, Governors, County Assembly Service Boards, Parliamentary Service Commission, and Cabinet Secretaries.
Also read: As the government attempts to lower the ballooning public wage bill, civil servants will lose allowances.
The SRC will be introducing new pay scales for public employees in July 2023, and this new information will be made public at the same time.
The SRC is responsible for deciding the salaries and benefits for all State officials and advising the federal and municipal governments on these matters in conformity with the 2010 Constitution.
