Contractors for CBC protest delayed payments and threaten to block entrance to classrooms.

Contractors in Migori County who were chosen to build classrooms under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) under President Uhuru Kenyatta’s administration have threatened to make the classrooms unavailable for lack of payment.

Since they finished building the CBC classrooms, the contractors claim that the government has not yet paid them for more than two months.

The builders said that the banks had already demanded that they fulfill their end of the agreement because they had borrowed millions of shillings to construct the CBC classrooms.

The government owes each contractor Kes. 1.3 million, according to one of the contractors who testified for the other contractors.

Additionally, he claimed that they had successfully filed for and been awarded the tenders that were posted in December 2021 for the first phase and in July 2022 for the second phase. He further stated that although they were assigned task and finished it on schedule, they had not yet received money.

The contractors asserted that their attempts to solicit input from Ministry of Education staff members were fruitless.

The Migori contractors are among numerous others who have not been paid nationwide for the project designed to ease grade six students’ transition to junior secondary schools. They are owed upwards of Kes. 7.8 billion (JSSs).

In addition to the contractors, students may find themselves kept out of the classrooms if payment is delayed.

The issues the contractors are having are hardly a drop in the ocean considering how frequently many other companies around the nation receive tenders but are not promptly paid.

It is unclear what will happen in response to the contractor’s protests, but they should be paid as quickly as possible because they met their half of the bargain.
